Rescuing our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes
Sharon Lamb, Lyn Mikel Brown
Though I am not often shocked by books, this one left me reeling. So why am I recommending it? I have to. It is simply too important not to read. The media and corporate marketing schemes are robbing our growing girls of their innate right to be real, to be unique and authentic beings, and to have healthy childhoods and futures. We, as parents and teachers, can hardly comprehend the situation, let alone know what to do about it.
Enter this courageous gift of a book. The authors (psychologists/educators and mothers of daughters themselves) studied every trend and fashion at the malls, watched all the popular T.V. kid shows and movies, pored over pre-teen and teen magazines, read all the Caldecott books, played with toys/games, and interviewed countless girls for their opinions.
