WATCH VIDEO FOR OVER THE RAINBOW
It is rare, indeed, when a song is loved by as many people of all ages for so many years as is ''Over the Rainbow.'' Truly, it is a national treasure and has touched an unfathomable number of hearts since Judy Garland first sang it over 70 years ago. Remembering this song, most of us envision a pig-tailed Dorothy dreamily musing about a land that she somehow knew existed far beyond Kansas.
The illustrations in this beautiful book give us a whole new experience, bringing so much life to the pages that you will want to linger on each one. Clouds, the moon, the planets, and the sun take on comfortingly benevolent personalities as the child navigates the sky to find that place over the rainbow.
What most folks don't know is that the song we came to love in ''The Wizard of Oz'' is abbreviated from the song as it was originally written.
The actual lyrics start with these words (and Judy Collins sings them on the included CD with the heart, soul, and beauty they deserve!)
When all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around,
Heaven opens a magic lane.
When all the clouds darken up the skyway,
There's a rainbow highway to be found.
Leading from your window pane to a place behind the sun,
Just a step beyond the rain.
Somewhere over the rainbow....
This song and the remarkable illustrations that go with it will be a rich addition to your family's reading experiences, and I daresay the book/CD pair will have a permanent place in your family's library. The accompanying CD features Judy Collins singing the original song, along with 2 others: ''White Coral Bells'' and ''I See the Moon.''
