A Rowdy Family Bike Adventure Across Canada on Seven Wheels
Joe Kurmaskie

Why would anyone think it a good idea to tackle a cycling trip with 3 young boys (one of whom is only 1) that involves 450 pounds of gear, 75 miles/day, and pretty much only one change of clothing per person? Hmmmm?

Joe and his wife, Beth, could come up with some compelling reasons (Joe would have more than Beth), but a large part of it has to do with this, from the book: ''We'd always agreed that we didn't want our kids to become the kind of disaffected types who grow up trapped in climate-controlled, overscheduled, hermetically sealed childhoods -- suffering Xbox carpal tunnel and nature deficit disorder.'' Well, Joe and Beth, no worries whatsoever about your kids dying a slow death in a hermetically sealed childhood, that's for sure!

Even if you're not a cycling fanatic, all you need to thoroughly enjoy this (''rowdy,'' from the subtitle is the perfect word) book is a sense of humor. This is the never-a-dull-moment account of a family that nothing seems to faze. Sure, there are some random expletives as the water boiling for morning coffee spills on Joe's thigh, basically cooking it. And other expletives during situations in which almost all of us would let loose with one if we were cycling 4,000 miles covered in dust and sweat with 3 youngsters in tow.

But this is not only adventure story; it's also a love story. Joe's writing is funny enough, but add in Beth's footnotes on many of the pages and you can pretty much find yourself in their shoes, without the dust and sweat but appreciating the experience along with them.

Laugh-out-louds? I guarantee it, and if you don't have any, return the book! Men will enjoy the adventure, the filth, and the boy-ness of it; women will connect with the insanity of the whole idea and especially with the obvious connections with each other that the Kurmaskie family totally enjoys.
