WATCH VIDEO TRAILER OF LEONARDO'S SHADOW
Some (okay, most) of the books my son reads for school are nothing special. If only he could read a book that would spark his interest in something beyond his 14-year-old views of the world -- like Leonardo's Shadow, which takes place during the Renaissance.
Rescued by Leonardo da Vinci, Giacomo is a boy without a past. While Leonardo apprentices him as his servant, Giacomo longs to paint and learn from his master. Instead, he becomes adept at holding off the creditors who threaten to withhold food and supplies, all the while encouraging Leonardo to finish his masterpiece, ''The Last Supper.''
Can Giacomo find an original solution to untangle Leonardo from his vast obligations? This thriller has more twists toward the end, concluding with an extremely satisfying finish. As compelling for adults as it is for teens, the combination of adventure, suspense, and humor makes for a brilliant read as it educates us about a fascinating time in history.
