VIDEO OF LEMON

Inspiring stories just don't get much better than this one, especially since it's based on a true story. Ms. Lake brings four eggs to her classroom so her students can watch them hatch. The class notices that one of the ducklings can't stretch her neck or stand up like the others. Named Lemon after Ms. Lake's favorite dessert, this little duck has a neurological problem and won't be able to walk. So the teacher takes the big-hearted step of adopting her and brings Lemon to school each day.

What life lessons are learned in this classroom, where the students gently care for Lemon and give her the special attention she needs! The students' genuine concern leads them to suggest ways to help Lemon so she can enjoy much of what other ducks take for granted. When one of the students brings in an old doggie life vest and it allows Lemon to stand up for the first time, I just about cheered!

My hope is that children will recognize that Lemon's disability does not make her any less of a duck. If every child could read this book and embrace its message, the world would surely be a more loving, accepting place. This gem teaches us all about acceptance and how a little ingenuity and a lot of love can transform the life of one lucky duck and those who love her.

Proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society (in honor of the author's father) and the Majestic Waterfowl Sanctuary. This book received a 2009 Honors Award from the National Parenting Publication Awards (NAPPA).

In Lemon's own ''words'': ''Here I am in my stand aid -- just like in my book! You can see in the video that I have a friend with me. I quacked a friendly greeting to him but he was a little shy.''
