Nathaniel Hawthorne
LISTEN TO SOUND CLIP!
Here are the most loved re-tellings of two Greek myths: ''The Golden Touch'' and ''Pandora's Box: The Paradise of Children.'' The story of Midas has been told in countless ways, but many feel that Hawthorne's version is the most descriptive and imagination-stretching. It is truly mind-boggling to envision the ways in which Midas' wish for gold backfires, bringing sadness when he thought he would be bestowed with happiness. (All does end well, though.)
There is also nothing quite like hearing what goes through Pandora's mind when, during the time when Mother Earth was young, all was sweetness and light, there were no adults, and there was nothing for children to do but play all day long, a mysterious box arrives at her home. A package with voices that beckon her to open it, which she can't resist doing. As we come to learn, it contained the whole collection of earthly sorrows. Once again, the descriptions of what comes to pass are thought-provoking and magical in their own way. The good news is that even though Pandora's actions changed the world forever more (in not such good ways), hope, too, was in that box—and it is hope that we humans can turn to time after time to see us through. Truly well-told and important stories for all growing minds.
