When I was really young, I settled for some pretty vague answers to my questions about sex. Most of us probably did. And pretty soon I just stopped asking the questions because they obviously made everyone uncomfortable. Then I found some pamphlets that my mother had accumulated from being a teacher. There was one about our 5 senses, one about our muscular, circulatory and skeletal systems, probably one on dental hygiene. But whoa! I'll never forget the one on sex! I must have read it a hundred times, completely mesmerized, and thinking, "There must be some mistake with this information. Babies simply don't get made doing that!!!!!" (That was when I was 15 years old.)

Those of us who grew up with such an attitudinal and informational handicap probably vowed long ago to be completely up front with our own children in the area of sex education. It's often not as easy as we thought it would be, but chances are we're being more thorough than our parents were, and we're presenting a healthier picture of the facts. We've just got to keep talking with our children about this so that they can come to us with questions and problems, and because it's our chance to instill our values in them if these values aren't the ones typically mirrored in the media and in social situations.

If you're with me so far, you're probably doing an admirable job on the sex ed front. And if you feel you wouldn't mind a little help which comes off as not too heavy (maybe even a little fun), but is chock full of the real information about sexuality, then perhaps this is what you need. For ages 10 and up, It's Perfectly Normal presents a thorough and clear picture, from conception and puberty to birth control and AIDS. Throughout, two cartoon characters, a curious bird and a squeamish bee, comment on the information and reflect the diverse feelings children and teenagers have about sex. Age-appropriate, color illustrations keep the tone light, while still presenting facts in a respectful, straightforward, non-alarmist fashion. Not only that, the artwork depicts real people - of different races, cultures, shapes, sizes and ages - so that all children and their families can relate to and feel comfortable with this book.

It covers the information that a child age 10-or-so and up needs to know: sex and gender, reproduction, heterosexuality/homosexuality, sex organs, puberty and hormones, female/male puberty, growing and changing bodies, masturbation, families, genetics, pregnancy, birth, in vitro/artificial insemination, postponement/abstinence/birth control, abortion, sexual abuse, STD's, AIDS, and responsible choices. A young person could read this book cover to cover (trust me: that will happen) and have no idea of the amount of information s/he has just ingested!

This is a well done gem of a book which is destined to become a classic in its field. My advice to you is not to delay in getting it. Your child will respect you for tackling the sex issue head on, and you will feel good about how you're equipping your daughter or son.

Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. Territories - We normally ship all HI and AK orders by U.S. Mail Parcel Post (normal delivery time is 2-4 weeks). Canadian and International Shipping:
Unfortunately, we no longer ship to international addresses, including Canada. We only ship to U.S. addresses, APOs, FPOs, State departments, and U.S. territories.
Sales Tax

We collect sales tax based on the "ship to" address of your order. We are required to collect sales tax in California, which is where we are located. If you're shipping to California, please include tax as follows:

Calculate 8.0% of the total of your merchandise.

We don't collect tax on gift certificates.

Sales Tax Exemption

We are required by law to collect sales tax on any orders going to California. If you are a tax-exempt organization, we need to have a copy of the Exemption Certificate issued to you by the State of California on file before you can order tax-free. You may either mail or fax (619-670-5203) us a copy of your certificate. We ask that you place your orders by mail, fax (619-670-5203) or phone. If you are ordering by phone, please call our customer service line, 1-888-481-6744, between 6am and 6pm Pacific time.

Return Policy

If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, simply return it within 4 months for a refund of the item price or an exchange for another item. For items returned after 4 months, we will give you a Chinaberry credit for the purchase price. On the back of your invoice, we provide you with a return form to complete. Please include it with your returned item(s). If an item is defective or if the order was filled incorrectly, we will send you a prepaid return label. If you have lost your return form, click here to print one out. We will do our best to handle the transaction quickly and in accordance with your wishes.
