Jim Weiss
LISTEN TO SOUND CLIP!
For many years, storyteller Jim Weiss has kindled the passions for classical literature in young listeners. Now, with the same thrills, laughter and insight into the human heart that have made his fiction recordings beloved to Chinaberry customers, Jim brings history to vivid life with astonishing stories of real people.
On this recording, we meet historic characters who have changed our world forever. First, we encounter the original absent-minded genius, Archimedes, scientist and mathematician supreme, and his cousin King Hieron, who wisely contrives to keep his nation at peace amid a world at war. When Hieron suspects a jeweler has made his new "golden" crown out of lesser materials, Archimedes must use his scientific talents to unravel the mystery. The result is fast-paced and laugh-out-loud funny.
Next, Jim moves us eighteen centuries forward from the first story, into the fiery debate about whether the earth or the sun is in the center of things. One by one, we meet the extraordinary Copernicus, draw swords and map the sky with the swashbuckling Danish astronomer and nobleman Tycho Brahe and his German assistant, Johannes Kepler, as he battles poverty. We experience the overwhelming genius of Italy's Galileo Galilei, impassioned seeker of truth in many sciences, who faces the threat of death for disclosing his findings. We smile with shy Isaac Newton, the Englishman who caps his predecessors' work with a discovery he knows will bring the fame he dreads. Each passes his knowledge to the next, giving us the sense of how human progress really happens bit by bit, and showing the personal price great discoverers must sometimes pay.
Listeners will learn a great deal about science and some of its most remarkable contributors, and best of all, will have enormous fun doing it. What a great way to turn on our kids and ourselves to the excitement of discovery.
