How a Wild Bird Rehabber Sought Adventure and Found Her Wings
Suzie Gilbert
WATCH VIDEO OF AUTHOR RELEASING A RESCUE BIRD
You don't need to know anything about birds in order to enjoy this book. Although I appreciate birds, I barely know a hooded warbler from a mourning dove, but I was glued to Flyaway the moment I started reading it. The book chronicles the offbeat life of a family for whom nothing wildlife-related is ever a surprise.
More deeply, it chronicles the passion mixed with humor, frustration, successes, and disappointments of a woman, wife, and mother who half-stumbles, half-barges into the world of bird rehabbing. In the process, her whole family finds themselves willing accomplices, their support, wit, and wry intelligence part of the tapestry the author weaves. In a home where parrots shriek Motown songs and recuperating herons take over the spare bathroom, there has to be an abundance of rolling-with-the-punches and compassion for all things feathered.
You will laugh, cry, and cheer the fact that 2 kids get to see their mother pursuing her most unlikely dream. Most importantly, you will get a glimpse into a world of selfless souls tirelessly working to make the plight of birds in this crowded world just a bit more tolerable. (I joined the Audubon Society after reading Flyaway. Couldn't help myself....)
