Mischa Berlinski
This was one of the best books I read last year, so I wasn't the least bit surprised when it became a finalist for the National Book Award. It is a murder mystery, a tale of remote civilizations and the people who study them, religion, taboos, and a great thriller, all rolled into one.
The tale begins in Thailand with an American just passing time, taking odd teaching jobs and newspaper jobs when he needs money. One day he gets a tip for a story from a fellow expatriate. An American anthropologist has been found dead by suicide in a prison where she was serving a life sentence for murder.
