The 50th Anniversary of a Classic Story
Truman Capote
Illustrated by Beth Peck

Certain books set up house inside your heart and never leave. Their words become part of you, like memories. I feel this way about Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory. I have read this jewel of a book over my years growing up in a Southern family, and I have read and re-read it to my daughter every Christmas of her life. It lives inside us now. I cannot think of a better book to bring out each year. Truly, every sentence is a delight. And the illustrations are magical.

Capote spent the first ten years of his life living in rural Alabama with distant relatives. His only true friend was an elderly cousin, who was ''still a child,'' herself, as Buddy, the young boy in his book, describes the frail, white-haired old lady he calls his ''friend.'' This is Capote's autobiographical story of waking up every November to ''fruitcake weather,'' of accompanying his friend to pick pecans, buy whiskey from Mr. Haha, and bake thirty cakes, which they send off to President Roosevelt, the bus driver, or even strangers. It is the touching, wistful tale of the abiding love between a boy and a spry old woman who is not afraid to wade through icy water and briars to find the best Christmas tree, who ''can't sleep a hoot'' on Christmas Eve, and who loves life so much she says, ''I could leave the world with today in my eyes.''

Though the text is exquisitely wrought, it is not too old for young ears. Indeed, such beautiful turns of phrase are gifts to growing hearts and minds. And, because Buddy, the little boy, tells the story, his way of speaking will appeal to any child, especially if read aloud. Take it from my heart, this book is a wonder. This 50th anniversary edition includes a CD of Celeste Holm reading the book.
