Steven Jenkins, Erika Stalder
Illustrated by Azadeh Houshyar

Being in high school is about so much more than showing up for class and preparing for your SATs! This book helps teens discover all that awaits them outside the classroom. It motivates them to get off the couch and off their phones to explore this big, wonderful (and sometimes scary) world!

Whether your teen is a bookworm, a party animal, or the class athlete, there's something for everybody here, like how to make a podcast, end an argument, study food labels, take a camping trip, and join a political campaign. They'll learn how to take their first road trip, raise money for a charity, make and follow a budget, and... well you get the idea. If your teen did even a quarter of the suggestions, you would have a very well-rounded (and competent) person entering his or her first year of college! There are a few issues some may feel inappropriate for their teens, such as ''Learn About Safe Sex.'' While it stresses the importance of never letting anyone pressure you into having sex, as well as the huge risks involved, it does say if you're going to be intimate with somebody, you must use protection. Also, because alcohol and drugs may show up in a teen's life, there are suggestions for how to handle that situation. (For more details, please click on the 'Read more' link below.) There is such a wealth of suggestions to choose from that even if you overlook the ones that aren't up your alley, there will be plenty that are. Teens LOVE this book!

Additional Information Some Parents May Want to Know

As mentioned in the annotation above, there are a few issues that some may feel are inappropriate for their teens. In addition to safe sex and alcohol/drugs, the others are as follows:
  • In the chapter ''With/For Friends,'' #16 is ''Read One Another's Palms.'' The authors basically say that life is so unpredictable that it's fun to experiment with different kinds of mysterious fortune-telling practices. It does caution kids not to take any of it too seriously.

  • In the chapter ''To Express Yourself,'' #60 is ''Make Your Own Halloween Costume.'' In this chapter, there is a section titled, ''Growing Up without Ho-ing Up.'' In a nutshell it says that once the trick-or-treating years are over, many teens seem to turn Halloween into a big ''pimp and ho'' fest with fishnet stockings, etc. The authors say this shows about as much originality as plastic costumes from Wal-Mart. They encourage teens to pick a more unusual theme, and if they must ''get their tramp on,'' at least go as a few Desperate Housewives to show some creativity.

  • In the chapter ''Because You're Only Young Once,'' #91 is ''Go Skinny Dipping.'' The authors say to only go skinny dipping with kids of their same gender because the whole point of skinny dipping is to experience the freedom that it makes you feel. They say it's difficult to feel wide open and free when you've got exes and potential boyfriends/girlfriends checking each other out. We thought this was very good advice!

  • Also in that same chapter, #92 is ''Get an Astrology Reading.'' In that chapter, there's a section titled ''Get Your Cards Read.'' Because we know that some parents are not comfortable with Tarot Cards, we thought this should be mentioned.
