Donna Jo Napoli
|
Dom is only nine years old when his mother leaves him on a ship in Naples, believing he will have a better life in America. He sails into New York harbor in 1892, completely alone, an immigrant with no ability to speak English, no one to greet him, and nowhere to sleep. He spends his first night in a wooden barrel in an alleyway. Faced with sheer survival, Dom soon learns to avoid the cruel padroni, men who pay the passages of homeless boys and then force them into slavery to work off the debt. He sets out to find work, desperate to make enough money to return to Naples. But what can a nine-year-old Jewish-Italian boy do in teeming, dangerous New York City?
